Congratulations, you made it to 2023. After hurtling through a year of collaborations, trend-cores and cancellations, we enter the New Year exhausted, but with a fresh lease of life – and with a brand new year, comes brand new drops. Stay tuned for our round up of everything you need to know as we head into the first week of 2023.

TRAPSTAR GIVES BACK

Prolific London label TRAPSTAR closed 2022 with true Christmas spirit. Taking to the streets of W12 with the TRAPSTAR community, the brand set up a communal link up in Shepherds Bush Market (which quickly over spilled into the surrounding spaces due to the 4000+ attendees) followed by a distribution of well-needed clothing, food, health essentials and sleeping bags. The initiative acted as a true representation of the TRAPSTAR ethos: to be able to create a meaningful subculture within the streetwear community without forgetting the struggles of rising to the top. CARHARTT TEASES FLORAL MARNI COLLAB

Is this our first glimpse at a Carhartt x Marni collab? Following social media whispers surrounding a floral-themed, colourful capsule collection, we’ve been teased with product photo leaks of bucket hats, hoodies, flared work-pants and corduroy classics. With more details likely to come as we move into 2023, keep your eyes peeled for this highly anticipated partnership.

MELTING SADNESS X ADIDAS GET TOOTHY FOR LNY

As the Lunar New Year drops come in hot, adidas have announced a collaboration with Zhang Quan’s brainchild brand Melting Sadness. Showcasing a collection of jaw-adorned sneakers reminiscent of the classic ADIMATIC style alongside a selection of punchy blue or orange colourways, the release’s shades, textures and campaign photos are a nod to the  “Dragon and Lion Dance”, a form of traditional Chinese dance whereby performers minim lion-like manoeuvres in costume.

FUTURA LABORATORIES & NEIGHBORHOOD PRESENT “HOMESPRAY”

New year, new capsule? Futura Laboratories and Japanese label Neighborhood have teamed up once more to bring us a selection of signature-adorned hoodies, t-shirts and hats, with a notably grunge-like theme throughout in the form of deep grey hues and cavernous blacks. The drop also includes the return of Futura 2000’s Pointman character, reflected in an incense chamber furnished with spray cans.

TRIBUTES POUR IN FOR WESTWOOD

As the world reeled from Dame Vivienne Westwood’s sudden death last week, tributes poured in from a host of huge industry names. Bella Hadid led the way with a poignant post of remembrance to the late designer, sharing images of their working relationship together. Following suit was the likes of Donatella Versace, Marc Jacobs and many more, all paying their respects to the fashion legend.

MUTUAL DISRESPECT: DRAKE SHARES UNSEEN ARREST FOOTAGE

Drake has hit the headlines once more, sharing a glimpse of unseen footage from his run in with the Swedish police back in July, surrounding marijuana-related charges. Including the clip in an Instagram roundup of his favourite 2022 moments, Aubrey captioned the post: “The funds are useful / The lyrics are truthful / The suspects are usual / The opps are delusional / The finish line is beautiful / And the disrespect is mutual”.

JORDAN BRAND CELEBRATE YEAR OF THE RABBIT

You thought that was it for the Year of the Rabbit releases? Guess again. Nike sub-label Jordan Brand have announced the release of a limited collection celebrating Lunar New Year, which includes fresh takes on the Air Jordan 1 Low OG, Jordan 23/7 and Air Jordan 1 Elevate Low, to name a few. Expected to launch later this month, the brand joins the horde of labels celebrating the Chinese New Year in style.

NIKE GO CYBER WITH ALYX 9SM

Nike have catapulted into the new year with a futuristic start, teaming up with ALYX 9SM to bring us a pair of sci-fi slides fit for any cyber-core follower. Featuring an unorthodox boat-like shape and perforated, moon-blue exteriors, this release aims to combine comfort with outer-space aesthetics.

AVATAR HITS NEW HEIGHTS

Despite rumours that the latest instalment of the Avatar series would fail to reach its predecessor’s stratospheric success, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ has successfully passed the 15th highest grossing film mark with a Global Box Office total of $1.37 billion. Following news that the movie needed $2 billion to break even, is the latest news a sign that the franchise will reach its goal?

DIESEL’S LUCKY LEAP INTO THE NEW YEAR

Diesel has joined the ranks of brands celebrating the Year of the Rabbit with a Lunar New Year capsule. Blazing through the collection with a range of denim jackets, shining 1DR handbag reimaginings and branded sweatshirts.
