The Met Gala 2026 was where fashion became art

If recent Met Galas have been about virality, 2026 felt a lot more intentional. This year’s carpet felt more meaningful, with guests leaning into the idea of fashion as a narrative. The looks worn by the A-listers asked the question: What are the clothes actually saying?

At the centre of this idea was Beyoncé, who arrived in a sculptural custom look by Olivier Rousteing that felt almost like an installation. It was structured, precise, and meticulously detailed. If anything, it set the tone early.

Not everyone followed that same direction. Kim Kardashian stayed firmly within her established aesthetic, choosing a tightly controlled silhouette that prioritised structure. It was instantly recognisable, though it raised the familiar question of whether consistently attending the Met Gala could be taken as a missed opportunity.

Elsewhere, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky once again demonstrated their fluency in red carpet dressing. Coordinated by never matching their looks, played with contrast, giving us a striking balance that they’ve come to own. Rihanna leaned into something more theatrical with a look by Margiela Couture, while Rocky sharpened things up with a more controlled edge with a custom Chanel look.

That sense of individuality carried through the rest of the carpet. Anok Yai offered a look with clean lines, exact proportions, and presence doing the most work. Another standout was Teyana Taylor, who was snapped in a striking, almost metallic-like dress to turn the heads of everyone in attendance. This was a standout moment.

Bad Bunny

For Bad Bunny, the Met was his place to challenge expectations. His take on menswear disrupted traditional codes, continuing his run of unpredictable, conversation-starting appearances. Meanwhile, Hailey Bieber opted out of maximalism altogether, choosing a stripped-back look that stood in quiet opposition to the surrounding spectacle. Kylie Jenner leaned the other way, embracing a more glamorous approach.

Among the more concept-driven moments, Skepta delivered one of the night’s most considered interpretations. His tailored look incorporated elements drawn from his own identity, turning the outfit into something closer to a personal archive inspired by his own tattoos.

Heidi Klum stayed true to classic red carpet codes with a polished and glamorous style, while Doja Cat once again refused to play it safe. Her look pushed into the realm of performance and provocation, blurring the lines between fashion and character in a way few others attempted.

What emerged over the course of the evening wasn’t just one specific trend. It was a night built on the idea of fashion being art, where the outfits that resonated weren’t necessarily the loudest, but the ones with a point of view.
