If you’ve been on fashion TikTok at all, you would’ve seen that the cropped, tighter ‘slutty’ top with long, floor-dragging trouser look is in full effect, and it’s because fashion mfers just discovered the ‘rule of thirds’ or the ‘golden ratio’. Originally a photography term used to create aesthetically pleasing compositions, the ‘golden ratio’ in fashion involves splitting the body into three parts and allocating two to the trousers and one to the top, giving off a more flattering look.
Men are cutting their tops for that raw finish or getting them hemmed shorter by a tailor, pairing them with wide, long bottoms that drag on the floor and rip because they’re being stepped on - aka a heel bite or heel drag. People have even been making videos embracing the wear and tear on hems, saying that it’s a “g-string for their boots” when the fabric rips to create a space for the heel to go through. With that being said, should we embrace the rips and distressing or should we save the hems from the physical (and emotional) damage and go back to the reverse?
By the reverse, we mean that prime 2015 Fear of God look or Cherry Bomb/Flower Boy, Pinterest e-boy era where skinny or cropped bottoms were the go-to. They’d either be cut too short or too slim to make any contact with the ground, keeping them safe and sound from any harm. With so little obstruction on the shoes, it really allowed the footwear to shine, too, as rather than just the toebox of shoes peaking out of baggy jeans and getting all the attention, the whole silhouette took centre stage.

Alternatively, tops during that time were also cut longer, with a big focus drapey, oversized tops to show the layering stack peaking behind each garment. It’s really the complete opposite of what we look for nowadays, with this cropped and boxy silhouette being what we’re pining over with the current trends.
But with the cyclical nature of fashion trends, could it make an eventual comeback? After all, the 2016 vibes are creeping back up thanks to people like Snow Strippers bringing that aesthetic back into the limelight and the Hedi Slimane fans pushing for the return of skinny jeans.

We know that the longer jeans and cropped tops combo seem like the most timeless thing in your wardrobe but remember when you said that about your Jordan 1s and cropped suit trousers? Trends, styles, and subcultures always come back, so let’s wait and see what the new hottest thing is next before cringing at our old fit pics and calling them outdated - maybe you were ahead of your time?
