Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of ‘The Odyssey’ has officially received an R rating, making it one of the most expensive adult-orientated movies ever produced.
With a reported budget of around $250 million, the film continues Nolan’s recent run of large-scale projects aimed at mature audiences following the success of ‘Oppenheimer’.
Based on Homer's ancient Greek epic, ‘The Odyssey’ follows Odysseus' decade-long journey home after the Trojan War, encountering mythical creatures, dangerous adversaries and the wrath of the gods along the way. The film stars Matt Damon in the lead role, alongside an ensemble cast that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o and Charlize Theron.
The R rating has sparked discussion given the scale of the production. Historical epics of this size are often positioned as broad four-quadrant releases, but Nolan has shown little interest in tailoring his films to meet those expectations. If anything, the classification suggests the filmmaker has fully embraced the darker and more violent aspects of the source material, which includes brutal battles, mythical monsters and themes of survival.
Anticipation for the film is already bigger than anyone could have imagined. Advance ticket sales have broken records in several markets, while early trailers have generated hundreds of millions of views online. Shot entirely using IMAX film cameras and filmed across locations including Greece, Morocco, Iceland and Scotland, ‘The Odyssey’ is shaping up to be Nolan's most ambitious production to date.
‘The Odyssey’ is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on July 17, 2026.
