It was a star-studded lineup of co-chairs at this year’s Met Gala and their fits proved it. The theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” championing black excellence - the style of black dandies, in particular. Unfortunately, LeBron James (the King) couldn’t make it because of an injury he sustained during his playoff game vs. the Timberwolves so he had to sit this one out.
But, without further ado, here’s a break down of what each co-chair was wearing on the night:
Pharrell Williams
Surprise, surprise: Pharrell’s wearing Louis Vuitton. Yeah, it’s pretty predictable (because he’s the creative director lol) but, with this one, it’s all in the details.
From afar, it looks pretty basic - it’s a monochromatic suit that’s spiced up with a cropped, double-breasted blazer in white instead of black. But, take a closer look, and you’ll see that it’s covered in individually stitched pearls - 15,000 of them, to be exact, taking over 400 hours to create. So yeah, pretty crazy flex - especially when it’s paired with substantially-flared suit trousers and slick black shades. He really doesn’t miss.
A$AP Rocky
The GOAT himself understood the assignment (as always) and came through with another crazy fit that really proves he has endless class. He took the self-expression aspect of the theme pretty seriously, with his whole fit designed by his label AWGE that he debuted last June.
He rocked an all-black look for the night, with a sportswear touch with his wool parka that’s inspired by Marmot jackets that’s considered a Harlem uniform in the winter. He paired that with matching black trousers, vest and boxers that were peaking through as well as a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes that had that red bottom flex. He topped it all off with diamond accessories including some diamond encrusted Ray-Bans (as CD of the brand) and an umbrella with a bedazzled gun handle - a pretty clear nod to his gun trial that he recently won earlier this year. Too hard.
Colman Domingo
To make your Met Gala one year and be a co-chair on the next one is no easy feat but Colman Domingo’s made it look pretty effortless. He made enough of a lasting impression last time around that he now stands next to the biggest names in fashion, with a seat on the co-chair with them. His fits were on point, too - yes, plural.
His first look of the night was a dramatic Valentino cape with a bedazzled chest piece and Boucheron jewellery to match, looking like real loyalty as he turned up at the carpet. It was yet another clear homage to the late Andre Leon Talley and his look at Met Gala 2011.
If that wasn’t enough, he graciously took the cape off to reveal a monochromatic ensemble that includes a standout plaid blazer with pearl embellishments, textured grey trousers and polka dot details on his tie and floral accoutrement. Dramatic, clean and classy - like a true dandy.
Lewis Hamilton
For Lewis Hamilton, it was all about honouring African heritage and that he did. Firstly, the F1 driver collaborated with Grace Wales Bonner to bring his vision to life - a designer known to create the finest collections inspired by Afro-Atlantic culture. Secondly, he really studied the brief and, well, he delivered.
He wore an all-cream look, with a silk tailcoat paired with wide trousers and a beret that’s as dandy as it gets. The glitter and glamour of his brooch and embellishments were complimented by some shiny, patent leather shoes with a bedazzled buckle to really show us that he was shining on all of us.
Anna Wintour
Miss Met Gala herself, Anna Wintour really showed us why she’s been a permanent co-chair since 1999. She’s been known to give anyone a helping hand if they need any advice on the evening and she proved to us why.
It seems like she hit up Pharrell for her fit, rocking up in a floor-length coat in sapphire blue silk that paired perfectly with her tonal Louis Vuitton gown with floral embroidery. In typical dandy fashion, the coat had a pretty substantial brooch on the lapel that looked amazing next to her dazzling necklace. A true veteran in the game.
