Duran Lantink, the emerging designer who just won the 2025 Woolmark Prize, is the new creative director of Jean Paul Gaultier. You probably remember Duran Lantink’s most recent FW25 collection for its combination of expert tailoring, abstract silhouettes, bold patterns, and the prosthetic breasts worn by one model that had people either outraged or hooked.
Duran Lantink’s appointment at Jean Paul Gaultier is major because, since JPG’s departure from the house in 2020, it’s operated without a permanent CD, instead using a rotating designer model, where a guest talent designs each couture collection. Through the past few years some GOATed names have taken on the task, including Glenn Martens, Olivier Rousteing, Haider Ackermann, Simone Rocha, Nicolas Di Felice and Ludovic de Saint Sernin.
Duran founded his brand in 2019, and is known for his experimental and exaggerated silhouettes and crazy knitwear pieces using deadstock and sustainable materials. We first saw his work with Janelle Monáe’s “vagina pants” featured in her “Pynk” music video. For SS21, he hosted a digital fashion show attended solely by drones. And he’s created insane custom looks for Doja Cat, Solange, and more.
On joining the house, Lantink said “I consider Jean Paul Gaultier a genius and part of a generation that kicked down the doors. To now step into the role of Creative Director is a true honor.” We’re hoping this move is the first of many major houses opening their doors to emerging artists and young designers, instead of only hiring from the same pool of existing creative directors each time.
Duran’s first RTW collection will be presented at PFW in September 2024. Wdyt it will look like?
