When you think about people who have a cult following, like Frank Ocean or Martin Margiela, what do they both have in common? Apart from being pioneers in their own industries, they’re both enigmas and leave little to no detail about their whereabouts online. But what is it about a mysterious demeanor that captures our attention?
Being mysterious has always been attractive. The chase of finding out more about someone who doesn’t reveal much has always been an appealing trait because it taps into our curiosity. The same can be said for creatives who leave die-hard fans constantly wanting to know more about them - it’s that nonchalant vibe that entices people into thinking they’re desirable and almost unattainable.

But like we said earlier, you actually have to be talented in the first place to gather a loyal following. People like Margiela and Frank Ocean; their disinterested, unrevealing nature just adds to the fascination. Because their art is one of the few things we have to go off, it keeps us fans engaged in making our own theories about the person they are, hoping that it resembles a piece of them.
With so many unknowns about their personality, it can also leave it up to the imagination about what kind of people they really are. It allows us to fill in the blanks about someone’s character, giving us the chance to choose traits that we have to relate to them - in turn, making us feel closer and more connected to them. I mean, who’s going to stop you?

In a world where every aspect of someone’s life is glorified on social media, being almost invisible online really sets you apart from everyone else and we, as humans, can’t help but be drawn to someone who is anti-conformist. The same way being so private invites us fans to be intrusive because we can’t help being a bit nosy - who doesn’t love snooping around and playing detective?
