There’s only a month to go until the Victoria & Albert Museum opens its new working store and visiting attraction, V&A East Storehouse, and the countdown has officially begun.
On May 13th, you can start booking on the V&A’s new “Order an Object” service. This is a free service that anyone can book to check out and have access to any object available at the V&A East Storehouse. From Schiaparelli, Comme des Garçons and Burberry archives to mid-century furniture, ancient Egyptian shoes and Japanese tea ceremony sets.
“V&A East Storehouse has been 10 years in the making,” said V&A’s deputy director and COO Tim Reeve. “[It] is a unique piece of museum architecture, and will look and feel like a very different cultural experience, defined by the theatre and wonder of the ‘back of house’ world of museum practice, and a radical new approach for the public to access their national collections.”
The East Storehouse will feature a unique cultural offering that is set to revolutionise access to art. Over 100 mini displays that include 1,500 items from the V&A archives like works by Zaha Hadid and Hew Locke, and a huge 11-metre-wide stage cloth designed by Pablo Picasso for Ballets Russes’ 1924 production of Le Train Bleu.
The Storehouse’s staff uniforms are designed by Robyn Lynch in consultation with V&A East’s Youth Collective – they’ll go so hard. And the building itself has been designed by Diller, Scofidio and Renfro and will be located in the East Bank of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
