Hot off the back of Versace’s bombshell SS22 show in Milan and Kim Jones’ second couture collection for Fendi, rumours are surfacing of a secret collaboration between the two houses. According to Business of Fashion, Versace sent out a cryptic gold-and-white “save the date” for Sunday 26th September, to a group of fashion insiders. The secretive invite was signed by creative director and former owner, Donatella.

This enigmatic summoning comes months after Kim Kardashian uploaded a photo of herself, Kim Jones and Donatella Versace together in Rome to Instagram, foreshadowing the exciting collaborative event.

Representatives from both labels have remained quiet about what could be going on, neither confirming or denying any of the rumours. And it is still unclear if Kim Kardashian and her brand, Skims, have anything to do with the project. However, Business of Fashion has now verified the whispers, confirming that “Donatella has been working with both of LVMH-owned Fendi’s creative directors, Silvia Venturini Fendi and Kim Jones, on a line set to be revealed” on Sunday.

Providing this speculation plays out, this collection marks only the second time that two major fashion houses have collaborated. The first was seen when Gucci and Balenciaga ‘hacked’ each other back in April. It will, however, be the first time two brands with separate parent companies join forces given that Versace is owned by Capri Holdings and Fendi is an LVMH label.

The fashion world is filled with whispers, exhilaration and expectations about the unique prospect of a Fendi x Versace collaboration. Previous collaborative collections have tended to divide opinions and, while they are exciting, they sometimes show a lack of creativity through heavily branded pieces that don’t quite hit the mark. Will the two brands come together harmoniously to bring something new to the high-fashion table? Or are we to expect a collaboration that relies on both brands’ historical and cultural relevance for a partnership that consists of two logos pushed together? The potential between these two fashion powerhouses is undeniable, with their influential archives, ability to forge new points of view and the incredible reputations of the designers in charge. We wait eagerly for the reveal. Do you all think it’s a match made in heaven or should it not happen already?
