The Milan Fashion Week trends you need to know

Milan Fashion Week just wrapped, so we’re taking a look at our notes from this season and making a list of the trends we’ve spotted so far. Get ready to chuck out your ironing board, step back into the archives, and start shopping for florals that look like an acid trip. Keep reading for the biggest trends from MFW SS25.

Throw out your iron - SS25 just decided that wrinkled clothing is in. From the wrinkled shirts and twisted straps on Prada’s runway to the unironed texture of trenches at Maximilian Davis’ Ferragamo, fashion brands are loving clothing that looks like its been pulled haphazardly from the back of your wardrobe or thrown on after sitting on the floor for a couple days. Even at Diesel, fabrics were manipulated into wrinkled textures, and Matthieu Blazy did the same at Bottega Veneta, seen in his seriously un-ironed suits.

After years of saying “florals for Spring aren’t groundbreaking,” we might’ve had our minds changed by the brands transforming floral prints with psychedelic neon hues. This season we saw Versace bring its bold colour palette to a tropical flower print; Marni transform tailored suits with pops of floral patterns; Emporio Armani bring a watercolour-style floral print to his collection, and plenty more.

Movement was a huge focus in the designs at SS25, and what allows for more movement than fringing? Between Moschino’s heritage fringed silhouettes making a return and Bottega putting its infamous fringing on everything, the bouncing texture of fringed dresses, skirts, jackets, and hats were everywhere. Even Prada delivered a fringed skirt, Diesel brought fringed denim jeans, and Missoni revealed a fully fringed dress.

Stripped back, understated, and timeless were three words that kept coming to mind throughout this Milan Fashion Week, particularly at the shows angling for a more wearable collection. With Boss revealing a simple collection focusing on tailoring, Max Mara delivering similarly stripped back designs in the style of timeless office-wear, and Tod’s also placing a focus on loose, casual yet elevated silhouettes, it felt like plenty of brands were angling for timelessness through wearable silhouettes and colours.

The presence of cone bras, ballet leotards, and organza everything can only mean one thing: unapologetic femininity is big this season. Fendi kicked off Milan Fashion Week with a collection that celebrated classic feminine styles and silhouettes, before Ferragamo brought a ballerina-inspired show, Dolce & Gabbana put lingerie on the runway; and Alberta Ferretti delivered some incredible floating organza gowns.
