Miu Miu said “age isn’t just a number, it’s a lifestyle” for FW24

Miu Miu said “age isn’t just a number, it’s a lifestyle” for FW24

At Prada’s FW24 show last week in Milan, we saw Co-Creative Director Miuccia Prada take on an aesthetic that blended the new and old, so it’s hardly surprising that the same designer’s younger brand, Miu Miu, would also follow suit (think: siblings copying siblings). Miu Miu might be Prada’s little sister, but for Fall/Winter 2024 it decided to ditch the mini skirts and frayed hem shirts for a slightly more mature look: one you might find in the back of your wealthy, cool, single aunt’s closet.

Self-describing its collection as “a vocabulary of clothing, from childhood to adulthood,” Miu Miu’s symbolism of the different eras of peoples’ lives is evident through its blend of youthful motifs, like trendy wrap-around lens sunglasses, with more dated styles, such as brooches on knitwear. This season, we saw the Miu Miu muse raiding her nan’s wardrobe and pairing borrowed slacks and loafers with her own cropped puffer jacket and, of course, an iconic Miu Miu leather bag.

One of the main things that Miuccia Prada has always stood for is dressing outside of expectations, and the uniforms that we assign age groups is a norm she loves to break. The first look on Miu Miu’s FW24 runway was the perfect representation of this, as it featured a button-down brown jacket and white tailored trousers, accessorised with a “vintage” pearl necklace and oversized leather gloves that you’d find in your grandmother’s glovebox, whilst still managing to appear youthful.

You might be wondering, “how do pearl necklaces convey youth?” but it’s the minute details that give this look its edge. The slight upturn of the model’s shirt collar, asymmetric and unmatched, is enough to signify that the Miu Miu model is playing dress-up; she’s trying this look out for size, but at heart is still the same playful, casual, carefree personality you already know and love. This asymmetric, messy collar motif is seen on almost every look that follows.

The theme of blending wardrobes is seen throughout the collection, appearing in the form of a floral puff-ball skirt, that perhaps Miu Miu’s muse has dragged from the depths of her own childhood wardrobe, paired with a cropped sailor jacket and shirt with a far more vintage aesthetic. Miu Miu’s recent New Balance collaboration sneakers also accessorise many of the looks, adding a youthful touch to footwear that otherwise is primarily made up of loafers, platform boots, and kitten heels.

In an era of young people desperate to feel older, and older people still trying to feel younger, the marriage between the aesthetics of different generations and eras of our lives feels like Miuccia Prada’s reminder of the fact that age actually is just a number. Especially when it comes to fashion. Whether you’re seventy, like Dr. Qin Huilan who appeared on the runway at Miu Miu FW24, or twenty-eight, like Gigi Hadid who also walked this season, this collection is designed for you.
