It’s not news that Kendrick Lamar loves Martine Rose. Kendrick’s ongoing collab with Martine is the ultimate partnership.
The creative linkup launched when Kendrick was on his last tour in the UK, and since then K dot has been donning Martine’s oversized Brit-coded windbreakers and “Barnsley” caps. “Working with Kendrick and the relationship we’ve developed has been really exciting – there’s a mutual respect and understanding,” Martine told us in an interview back in October.
Don’t get us wrong, Martine’s very much established – but to us it’s still exciting to see the biggest rapper in the world donning an independent British designer.
Man’s even gave her a shout-out in “Hillbillies”, rhyming her name with sardines: “Yeah n**** know that I’m best dressed, wear Martine when I board jets / They sardines and I’m big fish, eat caviar when I’m depressed.” He also wore her pieces in the music video.
The name-drop coincided with a limited-edition collection, also called “Hillbillies”, designed for Camp Flog Gnaw last year, which was a three-way collab between the two and Kendrick’s cousin Baby Keem, featuring graphic jerseys Martine-style.
Martine also dressed the Compton-born rapper on his “Big Steppers” tour, with a custom leather jacket with his “Oklama” moniker, plus leather pants and hoodie – taking inspo from Eazy-E, Tupac and the Compton Cowboys. Kendrick posted his custom look and Martine on his IG with the caption: “Bucketlist to work with martine rose she camera shy but gangsta say hello to my young.”
The British designer has dressed him for multiple performances and events – one of the most memorable is his insane head-to-toe Martine Rose look at the Grammys where he flexed the Nike MR4 Shox to collect his Grammy for best rap album (Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers).
Most recently, the designer has also dripped him out for most of the looks on his “Not Like Us” music video: the blue-and-white trackie, the leather jacket paired with the grey cargos, the green military-esque jacket.
Man can’t get enough of the Martine drip, and neither can we tbf. We’re just excited to see what’s next from the duo. (Praying for some good custom looks in his Superbowl performance and his GNX tour.)
