In the midst of an already chaotic game of creative director musical chairs, this morning Jonathan Anderson stepped down from his 11 year reign at Loewe. To most in the fashion industry, the news doesn’t come as a surprise, as whispers of his departure have been doing the rounds for the past few months.
As expected, the ever-prolific fashion rumour mill has already slated him for the top spot at Dior Homme, which, to be fair, is currently empty. It’s a move that would make sense: Dior is known for its opulence, intricate design, attention to detail, and GOATed atelier, often featuring sculptural shapes and nipped-in waistlines — all of which Anderson is well versed in. At Loewe, he’s crafted shirts made from meticulously placed feathers and dresses from mother-of-pearl shells. Basically, when it comes to Dior-like opulence, he gets it.
Which begs the question, who will replace Anderson at Loewe? Again, the fashion set has a decent idea of who might take the reins (spoiler alert, all bets are on it being a duo). It seems to be a toss up between Lucie and Luke Meier, who announced their departure from Jil Sander last month, or Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, who left Proenza Schouler in January. Tbf, either would make sense: according to The Cut, McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez are looking to explore a new project in Europe, which would track with them going to Paris-based Loewe, while Lucie and Luke Meier are nothing if not seasoned in minimalist luxury.
But tbf, if fashion’s recent unpredictability is anything to go by (AKA Demna at Gucci), it might be someone totally left field, causing press to soar but stocks to fall (as has happened at Kering). In which case, it’s anyone’s guess.
