The Metropolitan Museum of Art has revealed the theme for the 2027 Met Gala, announcing "extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday" as the focus of next year's event.
Scheduled to take place on May 3, 2027, the annual fashion spectacle will turn its attention to the clothing we encounter every day, examining how familiar wardrobe essentials can become expressions of creativity, craftsmanship and cultural identity.
Moving away from the extravagant designs traditionally associated with the Met Gala, the upcoming exhibition will explore the creative possibilities of ordinary garments. From denim jeans and T-shirts to puffer jackets, the theme will examine how designers reinterpret everyday pieces through innovative construction, materials and unexpected design choices.
The announcement also marks a change in direction for the Costume Institute, following the cancellation of a previously planned exhibition dedicated to designer John Galliano. Instead, the museum will explore the relationship between fashion and daily life, placing familiar clothing at the centre of its creative conversation.
As one of the biggest events on the fashion calendar, the Met Gala regularly sees designers and celebrities interpret its annual theme through elaborate custom looks. With everyday dressing now taking centre stage, the 2027 edition could offer an entirely different perspective on red carpet fashion.
The 2027 Met Gala will take place on May 3 at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, with the official dress code and celebrity co-chairs still to be announced.
