Seán McGirr is departing Alexander McQueen after three years as creative director, bringing another chapter of change to the British fashion house as parent company Kering continues to reshape its luxury portfolio.
The Irish designer was appointed in October 2023, succeeding Sarah Burton, who had spent more than two decades at McQueen, including 13 years leading the house following founder Lee Alexander McQueen's death in 2010.
Having previously worked as head of ready-to-wear at JW Anderson, alongside earlier experience at Dries Van Noten and Uniqlo, McGirr was tasked with bringing a fresh perspective to one of British fashion's most recognisable names.
His appointment came with considerable expectations, though, as burton had established a reputation for intricate craftsmanship, romantic silhouettes and an approach that balanced the house's theatrical heritage with commercial appeal. McGirr, meanwhile, represented a younger generation of designers, bringing a more experimental attitude shaped by contemporary youth culture.
His debut AW24 collection, presented in Paris in March 2024, immediately divided opinion. Drawing inspiration from McQueen's early work, the designer introduced exaggerated proportions, sculptural tailoring and unconventional constructions that sought to reconnect the house with its rebellious beginnings.
While the collection received a mixed response, it established the direction McGirr would continue to explore throughout his tenure. Across subsequent seasons, the designer experimented with sharp silhouettes, gothic influences, distressed textures and references to London's underground creative communities.
His time at the label also coincided with significant changes across the wider luxury industry, as major fashion houses faced increasing pressure to balance creative experimentation with commercial performance.
McGirr's SS27 collection brought the house back to London Fashion Week, marking a symbolic homecoming for a brand whose identity has remained closely connected to the British capital.
His departure now raises questions about the future direction of Alexander McQueen, which remains one of the most distinctive labels within Kering's portfolio.
With the house preparing for another creative transition, attention will turn to who takes over the role and how the next chapter will balance McQueen's established identity with the demands of an increasingly competitive luxury market.
