As we enter the year’s coldest season, the fashion’s getting colder, too. We’ve just entered nonchalant winter and there’s no going back. The fits this season are muted, chill and cosy.
Fall/winter fashion this season is a little different to previous years, where we went for bolder, louder fits with colourful puffers, big silhouettes, a lot of camo, a lot of three stripes – and let’s not forget all the bows, the office sirens and the mob wives of TikTok that were taking over our FYPs. The ‘90s were coming back with numerous aesthetics in 2023, but this year it’s ‘90s minimalism that’s sat on the throne. In its 2024 Resale Report The Real Real saw a drop in streetwear labels (such as Supreme, whose searches decreased by 25%), but noticed a rise in suiting, with consumers copping more Armani, Zegna and Dior Homme.
This season, the vibe is toned down, timeless, and demure. We’re seeing a lot of blacks, greys and tonal outfits that let the silhouettes and the textures speak for themselves – we’re opting for more Rick vibes, archive Helmut Lang, throwing in Our Legacy and Post Archive Faction, logo-less basics, wools and comfortable leather boots or loafers, or black sneakers. We’re all just a “chill guy”, innit?
It’s been a long-time coming. We’ve been looking at the rise of quiet luxury since last year with Phoebe Philo’s return and brands such as Bottega Veneta and The Row rising on the Lyst Q4 Index, while more logo-forward labels such as Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton dropping lower on the ranks. Fashion is increasingly becoming an IYKYK space where branding isn’t everything, it’s about the aesthetic and the design. Bottega’s intrecciato weave, for example, is instantly recognisable – the bag doesn’t even need a logo to advertise itself, it’s a bigger flex to have a strong, distinctive design.
The overconsumption and quick turnaround of microtrends on TikTok has also caused the fashion zeitgeist to chill tf out. We all just want to strip it back. And with recession hitting us hard, we’re going for cosy and low-key vibes, and investing our money on things that will last, not dropping coin on a microtrend that we’re going to not wear next season.
Plus, with the rise of archive fashion and archive fashion mfs, the more nonchalant you act about your archive pieces, the better your drip. If they know, they know. The vibe is you want to seem like you just put that sh*t on and left the house. But your wardrobe’s so well-curated that whatever you put on will look good and effortless, no matter what.
