Jonathan Anderson will head up Dior Women's and Couture

Jonathan Anderson announced this morning that he is taking over Dior women's and Dior Couture. The news comes hot off the heels of last week's announcement that Maria Grazia Chiuri is stepping down from the house. Anderson will be the first designer to helm both the women's and men's lines.

In April, the Irish designer confirmed he was taking over from Kim Jones as artistic director of Dior Homme, a month after he stepped down as creative director of Loewe, which, like Dior, is owned by LVMH.

The designer took to Instagram to share, “It is a great honor to join the House of Dior as Creative Director of both women’s and men’s collections. I have always been inspired by the rich history of this House, its depth, and empathy. I look forward to working alongside its legendary Ateliers to craft the next chapter of this incredible story. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Bernard Arnault and Delphine Arnault for their trust and loyalty over the years.”

The move means that Anderson will design 18 collections per year: 10 for Dior, four for his namesake brand JW Anderson, and two for JW Anderson x Uniqlo.

The news comes amid widespread fashion musical chairs, with Demna Gavasalia moving from Balenciaga to Gucci, Loewe naming Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez as its new creative directors, Lucie and Luke Meier stepping down from Jil Sander, and Glen Martins becoming creative director at Maison Margiela, to name but a few.

The announcement will undoubtedly add to the discourse about how white and male fashion is looking, especially given the irony of Maria Grazia was the first woman creative director of Dior, and took the brand in a feminist direction.

Anderson’s first collection for Dior Women’s will be showcased during Paris Fashion Week in October.
