Hermès is taking a different approach to celebrating its history, opening an immersive exhibition and theatrical production in Hong Kong that brings almost 200 years of craftsmanship, design and storytelling to the stage.
Titled "HERMÈSTORIES", the experience has taken over Freespace in Hong Kong's West Kowloon Cultural District, inviting visitors to explore the French luxury house's evolution through live performances, interactive displays and a closer look at some of its most recognisable creations. Running until November 8, the exhibition offers an opportunity to discover the stories behind a brand whose influence extends far beyond fashion.
Established in Paris in 1837, Hermès began as a specialist in equestrian equipment before expanding into leather goods, ready-to-wear, accessories and much more. That history provides the inspiration for the experience, which explores the craftsmanship and creative thinking behind everything from the house's signature silk scarves to its celebrated Birkin and Kelly bags.
At the centre of the production is a theatrical performance written by Pauline Bayle and directed by Joe Hufton. The story follows a character named Lad, a stable groom played by a young woman, as she journeys through an imaginative interpretation of Paris' Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré, home to Hermès' historic flagship store. Along the way, a series of unusual encounters introduce audiences to the people, objects and ideas that have helped shape the house over the years.
The performance also incorporates live sound effects, music and playful storytelling, with everyday Hermès objects becoming part of the action. From its familiar orange packaging to silk scarves, zips and the Bolide bag, the production gives some of the brand's best-known signatures an unexpected role on stage.
Away from the performance, visitors can explore an accompanying exhibition designed to resemble a theatrical storage space. The installation brings together archival references, signature designs and examples of artisanal craftsmanship, offering a closer look at the techniques and creative processes behind Hermès' 16 specialist métiers.
The project reflects Hermès' continued interest in presenting its heritage through cultural experiences, giving audiences an opportunity to engage with the house outside the traditional setting of a boutique or fashion exhibition.
"HERMÈSTORIES" is open at Freespace in Hong Kong's West Kowloon Cultural District until November 8, 2026. Admission is free, with advance registration recommended through the official Hermès website.
