5 times the runway was inspired by film

Ever thought the runway felt like a scene straight out of a movie? Well, maybe that's because it was. Fashion designers take inspiration from all over the place, from people to places, so it's no surprise that sometimes the films they sit down to watch inspire their collections too. Here's five times that the runway really was inspired by film.

When Undercover SS18 did The Shining (1980)

Back in 2017, Undercover’s Jun Takahashi was obviously going through a horror movie phase because he dropped two collections inspired by them in one year: one by The Shining and another by A Clockwork Orange. The collection we wanna talk about is Spring 2018, though, which took inspo from the first one. Featuring twins (ofc), retro Americana references, and some creepy tiny skull motifs, Undercover’s show immersed us in the surreal world of Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 movie.

When Junya Watanabe Fall 2006 did Taxi Driver (1976)

Junya Watanabe must be a movie buff because his Fall 2006 Men’s show was a carbon copy of the fits from Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. Emulating the looks worn by protagonist Travis Bickle in the movie, Junya Watanabe’s Fall 2006 collection featured shaved mohawk hairstyles, army green jackets, tailored shirts, and distressed knitwear.

When Alexander McQueen SS96 did The Hunger (1983)

Back in the day, Lee Alexander McQueen used to be a film fan himself, as evidenced by his SS96 collection, inspired by Tony Scott’s vampire flick The Hunger. The movie, which starred David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve, was famous at the time for its sleek, sexy gothic fits, which perfectly matched the aesthetic of McQueen’s own runway shows. So it just makes sense that he put bloody handprints and claw-slashed tops on the runway, having models walk in drunken steps, flipping the audience off.

When Gucci Fall 2015 did The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

Alessandro Michele is known for his fun, playful takes on fashion, so it makes sense that he’d be inspired by the whimsical cinematic world of Wes Anderson. At his AW15 show - his first collection for Gucci - Michele looked to the movie The Royal Tenanbaums for inspiration, specifically drawing from the fits worn by character Margot Tenenbaum. What we ended up with were vintage-inspired fur coats, sleek loafers, and plenty of blonde bobs.

When Moschino Resort 2020 did Scream (1996)

Fans of the scream queen will love Jeremy Scott’s 2020 Resort collection for Moschino, which drew inspiration from a variety of different horror movies, with models donning villainous fits and scary masks, but the main character of the show was no doubt the drew Drew Barrymore-inspired model who ran screaming up the runway at the start.
