From featuring in Bond movies to working with Wes Anderson on a short film of its own, Montblanc’s pens are no stranger to the silver screen. Now the brand is finally dropping a €1.6 million High Artistry fountain pen to commemorate that. We were invited to Montblanc Haus in Hamburg, Germany to take a closer look at Montblanc’s new, one-of-a-kind “High Artistry: The World of Cinema” fountain pen. Here’s everything you need to know.
If you know Montblanc, you know its limited edition High Artistry writing instruments are some of the most sought after in the world, and the latest collection paying homage to cinema is no exception. Its protagonist, “The World of Cinema” Limited Edition 1 features a silhouette inspired by a particularly iconic film award (you know the one) and is made from solid gold set with various gemstones such as brilliant cut diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds. The piece also boasts inlays ranging from miniature painting to hand-engravings depicting various motifs from the history of cinema.
Since 1906 when Montblanc was founded, its pens have been cast in starring roles in pop culture. From the set of James Bond’s 1983 movie Octopussy to the hands of Jude Law in The Talented Mr. Ripley, Montblanc’s writing instruments have been used as a status symbol in cinema over the years. Even today, Montblanc’s writing instruments continue to make cameos on the big screen, which is exactly why old Hollywood and the glamour of iconic movies are ingrained in the brand’s history.
From retro buckets of popcorn and old film projectors, to famous movie props like a set of ruby slippers, the Easter eggs hidden throughout Montblanc’s “The World of Cinema” Limited Edition 1 fountain pen pay homage to the classic star-studded aesthetic of old Hollywood. Its icier than any pen we’ve seen before, featuring nine square cut emeralds, a glistening red garnet, and an approximately 5 carat, brilliant cut diamond in the centre of the fountain pen’s cap, which - for some added “movie magic” - actually lifts when you turn the cap’s top ring.
From the star-spangled banner symbolising the home of Hollywood, to the fountain pen’s clip in the shape of an old film projector and classic film strips, every minute detail of this writing instrument has been thoughtfully designed.
Unlike Montblanc’s Meisterstück, its most well-known fountain pen that’s considered a design icon and heirloom, a High Artistry writing instrument is transcendent. Montblanc’s High Artistry pens are both a feat of engineering and craftsmanship resulting in what’s essentially a functional piece of art.
From the hand-painted miniature picture of a classic movie couple, to a nib embossed with the outline of a director’s chair and the precisely cut diamonds covering its surface, Montblanc’s “High Artistry: The World of Cinema” Limited Edition 1 is as much of a piece of history as the old Hollywood films it celebrates.
