A couple known for scaling some of the world's tallest landmarks has been arrested after reaching the summit of New York City's Empire State Building, where they celebrated an engagement high above the skyline.
Russian climbers Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus made their way to the very top of the iconic skyscraper, unfurling a banner that read, "When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace." Moments later, Beerkus proposed, dropping to one knee before the pair embraced and kissed.
The duo remained at the building's highest point for around 10 minutes. Their relationship and passion for extreme urban climbing were previously documented in the 2024 film 'Skywalkers: A Love Story.'
The New York Police Department confirmed both climbers were taken into custody after returning to a lower section of the tower. They are expected to face several charges, including burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, trespassing and disorderly conduct.
According to officials, the pair are believed to have accessed the building's restricted 103rd floor through a maintenance hatch normally used for water tower work. While the 102nd floor is open to visitors, authorities have not yet explained how they reached the level above it.
After climbing down from the building's 200-foot telecommunications mast, Beerkus proposed on a platform beneath the spire. Nikolau removed her face covering before the couple shared a kiss.
The stunt was documented in real time on social media, with Nikolau uploading footage from the summit alongside a photo capturing the proposal.
Body camera footage released by police later showed officers climbing a caged ladder to reach the couple. One officer calmly instructed them to remain where they were, telling them they were not permitted to be on the structure. When asked what language they spoke, Nikolau replied that they were Russian.
The Empire State Building said the incident did not place visitors, tenants or guests at risk. In a statement, a spokesperson also noted that while the proposal was unconventional, the observation deck already offers a far safer setting for couples looking to mark the occasion.
