The sentiment is female empowerment and the receiver is Converse. The American shoe and lifestyle brand has tapped a trio of eclectic female designers to redefine the status quo via way of the iconic Chuck Taylor, as seen through the eyes of Isabel Marant, Feng Chen Wang, and Martine Ali.
Each designer has been tasked to redefine the shoe that is so intrinsic to Converse’s DNA, adding a touch of designer edge to the classic Chuck Taylor. First up on the list to give us their take is the Brooklyn-based jewellery designer, Martine Ali.
Inspired by the late ‘90s and early ‘00s, specifically looking at the subcultures of grunge and hip hop, Martine Ali’s designs have been worn by the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Doja Cat, and Rihanna, becoming a staple in the eye of culture. Martine Ali brings this aesthetic to the table, redesigning the shoe with a metallic edge.
The Martine Ali-designed shoe comes in the form of a Converse Chuck 70 De Luxe Wedge, which, as the name suggests, features a wedged heel, giving it an angular edge rooted in self expression. The shape of the all-black shoe is further played with on the toe cap, which comes squared.
The Chuck 70 De Luxe Wedge is the epitome of a power stance shoe, with its four-inch elevation. It also boasts metallic hardware eyelets and studs, adding a touch of Martine Ali’s background in jewellery. It’s a collision of two worlds that offers a product unlike anything either brand has ever done.
A campaign, shot by Hannah Sider, accompanies the shoe drop, where a sense of community is highlighted with models each showcasing the product in their own way, through their own style. It also offers a diverse take on femininity, with each outfit representing a different take on the aesthetic.
Head over to Converse’s website to get the Martine Ali Chuck 70 De Luxe Wedge, which drops on December 1.
