Everyone on TikTok has been spiralling about “aliens in the ocean” over the weekend. Last week, the Pentagon released a report on Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAPs), aka UFOs, stating that there have been over 757 reports of these UAPs between May 2023 and June 2024. Most of these were ruled out as being birds, clouds, etc. But 21 of them felt real, and are still under investigation. In one of these cases, a commercial flight crew reported a near miss with a “cylindrical object” while flying over the Atlantic Ocean near New York.
There’s no real evidence just yet, but with this new potential alien invasion in our hands, we’ve been thinking these runway looks would look hard on the UAPs, if they were to come out of the ocean with drip.
Alexander McQueen SS10

Plato’s Atlantis by Alexander McQueen was based on the concept of humanity looking at an underwater future as a result of global warming and ice melting. McQueen’s hybrid vision fused women with sea mammals, adding textures that mimicked the skin of sharks and dolphins and alien-esque “Armadillo” 15-inch heels (which were famously worn by Lady Gaga in her “Bad Romance” video). The aliens would love these.
Rick Owens “Porterville” FW24

Rick Owens’ menswear collection for FW24, gave apocalyptic vibes – from the inflatable boots and seaweed-looking head-gear to the alien-esque makeup and structured, puffy silhouettes. The UAPs would rise from the water wearing Look 45, for sure.
Undercover by Jun Takahashi “Underman” SS11

This collection was inspired by Japanese superheroes, and features a fictional character in the year 20XX, who restores lost souls that have been paralysed by evil forces. It’s giving alien invasion.
Givenchy FW99

One of the most memorable collections of Alexander McQueen’s tenure at Givenchy, FW99 was inspired by the fear of the future. The collection embedded a lot of robotic, circuit-board looks with glow-in-the-dark features. The main character of the show was the closing look: a clear moulded plastic body-cast top with flashing LEDs, which was very futuristic at the time.
Iris Van Herpen “Sensory Seas” SS20

If the UAPs have refined taste, they’d be wearing Iris Van Herpen. The designer has always delivered unmatched, ethereal out-of-this-world couture. The “Sensory Seas” collection took inspiration from “fibrous marine ecology” of the oceans. Imagine aliens coming to the shore, wearing sea organisms-inspired couture.
The A-POC by Issey Miyake “Alien” FW1999/2000

Part of the wider “A Piece of Cloth” concept – a collab between Issey Miyake and Dai Fujiwara that put 23 models in one dress – the “Alien” piece is made up of double-layered mesh fabric, covering the face. At the fashion show, two fashion assistants came on the runway to cut out and open up the fabric, revealing a new silhouette.
Thierry Mugler SS97

Known as the “bug” collection, Mugler’s “Les Insectes” transformed models into futuristic winged creatures. You know the UAPs will probably have intricate head-gear, antlers and avant-garde spacey bug sunglasses.
Balenciaga Resort ‘23

If the aliens don’t wear a bit of Balenci, who will? Demna’s Resort ‘23 collection for the French house showed at the New York Stock Exchange with a cast of masked models (yk Ye loved these masks) wearing adidas uniforms, brutalist power-shoulders and pussybows. If the UFOs have steez, they’d get the vibe.
Noir Kei Ninomiya SS20

On the other end of the spectrum, what if the aliens show up in cloud-like couture? Comme des Garçons alumnus, Noir Kei Ninomiya’s SS20 show presented cloud-esque tulle dresses with moss-like headwear. We can see an alien wearing it, ngl.
