Only days after Sarah Burton’s emotional and poignant final show for Alexander McQueen, Seán McGirr has been named the new creative director of the brand.
His previous role was as head of Ready-to-Wear at JW Anderson – a key position that has undoubtedly helped propel the brand into new levels of public acclaim and success. Before that, McGirr was at Dries Van Noten.
It was only 3 weeks ago that it was announced that Sarah Burton was to parting ways with Alexander McQueen, after 26 years at the brand. The creative director left behind a rare longevity in the fashion industry, first joining the brand as an intern during her time as a student before returning to the house after graduating from Central Saint Martins and working alongside McQueen for more than 14 years.
Burton was made creative director following the death of Lee Alexander McQueen in 2010, and the Spring 24 collection just shown Paris was the emotional and poignant conclusion of the partnership between Burton and the fashion house.
Whilst his previous experience will undoubtedly have put McGirr in good stead, Creative Director of Alexander McQueen is a huge role for anyone to fill – all eyes will inevitably be on Seán McGirr as he navigates this new, and heavily surveilled, terrain.
