Zendaya has been slaying red carpets, but now the CFDA are recognising her contributions to fashion by honouring her with the award of 2021 Fashion Icon in the upcoming awards ceremony. Together with her stylist, she’s come a long way from her Disney days, now operating as both an incredible actress and as a pioneer of style at only 25 years old. Her success as one of the hottest stars of the moment doesn’t stop her continuing to pave the way for young Black actors in the industry.
As well as killing it wherever she’s been seen recently, one of Zendaya’s earlier iconic looks include that Cinderella Met Gala moment in 2019, in which she wore a custom Tommy Hilfiger gown that literally lit up the red carpet. Her stylist, Law Roach the mastermind behind the actor’s iconic fashion moments, accompanied her as her own personal fairy godmother – wand and all.
Zendaya and Law have been dominating the press surrounding Z’s most recent film release, Dune – no mean feat, especially when considering her co-star is none other than Gen-Z heartthrob Timothée Chalamet. A standout recent look, Zendaya wore a custom Balmain wet look dress for the Venice Film Festival that proved her (and Law’s) fingers were on the pulse of the latest emerging high fashion trends.
Since then, the stylist and actor duo have moved quickly: securing designs fresh off of the runway from the most recent fashion month for respective premieres. These included Jonathan Anderson’s Loewe gown, complete with a gold breastplate, a heart-centered Nensi Dojaka dress from the designer’s latest London Fashion Week show, a Vivienne Westwood look with a chain top, a purple Alaïa set, and most recently, a structured Rick Owens sequin gown from the designer’s latest show in Paris.
With this line up of looks, and a lot of work from stylist extraordinaire Law Roach, Zendaya has reached fashion icon status – and the CFDA have done well to acknowledge this – “she’s an icon, she’s a legend, and she IS the moment”.
