Auction house Sotheby’s is set to host a private sale for a black leather size 12 Nike Air Yeezy 1 prototype, which is expected to go for more than US$1 million. This would be the largest valuation ever for a pair of shoes. Sneaker collection and curator Ryan Chang of @applied.arts.nyc is the man auctioning off the pair.
The shoe, which was designed in 2008, was Kanye West’s first signature sneaker with Nike. Kanye famously debuted the model during the 50th annual Grammy Awards, in which he performed ‘Hey Mama’ and ‘Stronger’. The shoe made history as one of the first-ever sneakers created for an artist.
In a statement, Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s Head of Streetwear and Modern Collectables said “This pair is critical to the development of the Yeezy franchise, which has become one of the most important sneaker and lifestyle brands in history”.
Prior to the auction, the shoe will be on display at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from April 16 to April 21.
