PRADA MEN’S SS24 SAID: GREEN SLIME, BUT MAKE IT FASHION

Prada said alien, green slime, but make it fashion for its SS24 Menswear show in Milan. Hosted at the Deposito of the Fondazione Prada, the brand’s menswear show yesterday utilised a slightly different setting. Whilst at first glance the showspace was typically Prada – sleek, modern, and stylish – there was an otherworldly element to the space: slime.

Last Milan Men’s Fashion Week, Prada raised the roof for its Men’s FW23 show by creating a showspace with a ceiling that literally moved upwards, revealing the true, impressive expanse of the space. Whilst a literal moving ceiling seems kind of hard to out-do, Prada’s done it.

Showcasing the brand’s SS24 Menswear collection yesterday in Milan, the showspace was similarly dimly lit and low ceilinged as audiences entered – but obviously, no one was falling for that again after last time. As the bright white lights came up it was revealed to be a sort of metallic chamber with industrial silver floors, ceilings, and walls.

The soundtrack that echoed about the space was familiar, given that it was the same track from FW23: “Closer” by Nine Inch Nails. Whilst many of us forget to notice the music played over runway shows, they actually say a lot about the collection itself; no doubt, Nine Inch Nails’ futuristic instrumental had some inspiration.

As the first models entered the space, a liquid material began to fall from the ceiling in thick curtains, creating a moving, opaque wall that seperated audiences from the collection. As the show continued, the substance began to pool at their feet in thick, green puddles either side of the runway.

There’s something about juxtaposing an expertly tailored, luxury menswear collection with a pile of green slime; is it a poetic symbol of the human nature of fashion oozing through the shiny, polished cracks, or did Prada just feel like pouring goo onto the runway? Either way, we kind of can’t help but love it.
