Every year, Pirelli, the company best known for its tires, steps out of the automotive world to give us some iconic culturally-informed calendars, and this year marks a special milestone for the brand. Creative directed and shot by the Ghanaian visual artist, Prince Gyasi, the 2024 Pirelli calendar is the first shot by a Black creative, enlisting a fully Black cast that includes none other than Naomi Campbell

The 50th edition of the calendar is titled Timeless, which holds a special meaning to Prince Gyasi. “We are not born ‘timeless’, but we become it,” he states. Earlier this year, we chatted with the photographer, who dug deeper into this saying: “I wanted to let people understand that you can work towards it to become that. That’s what the whole concept of a calendar stands for.”

Timelessness is quite an ironic theme for a calendar, which is inherently timely. But one quick glance at Prince Gyasi’s photos and a sense of enduring style and stories worth sharing across generations is felt immediately. His signature aesthetic is displayed through an image per month, which highlights vivid colours with sharp contrasts, juxtaposing them with his subjects.

Naomi Campbell is found standing powerfully in front of a melting clock, setting the tone for the rest of the calendar. Seen on the “Time Stopper” page, the supermodel is the perfect representation of Prince Gyasi’s timeless theme, of which he says “[Naomi] is not of my generation, but she’s still an icon in my generation. This can only happen if you’re committed to your work and beliefs.”

Other talents to join the calendar include actor Idris Elba, singer and actress Teyana Taylor, actress Angela Bassett, poet Amanda Gorman, singer-songwriter Tiwa Savage, writer Margot Lee Shetterly, footballer Marcel Desailly, singer-songwriter Jeymes Samuel, painter Amoako Boafo, and last but definitely not least, King Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Grand Patron of the Grand Lodge of Ghana and the Sword Bearer of the United Grand Lodge of England – all of who take on this timeless theme through their own respective work and ethics.

Accompanying the calendar is a manifesto written by Prince Gyasi, highlighting the importance of perpetually. This manifesto, and the 2024 Pirelli calendar, is dedicated to the youth, and Prince Gyasi’s hopes with this work is to instil in them an inspiration pot and a source of motivation for the next generation of creatives. “I hope to let them understand that they can do whatever they want to do if they put their mind to it and they’re consistent enough.”
