The Mercedes-AMG C 43 Sedan is the perfect balance of turbo and tech

While we were in LA, we took the Mercedes-AMG C 43 Sedan for a spin, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. A highlight of Mercedes-AMG’s 2023 offering, it can definitely hold its own, from the City of Angels’ sunshine-soaked roads to the unpredictable climates of the UK.

Inside, luxury Nappa leather is used to dress the AMG performance steering wheel with a perforated grip and silver-coloured aluminium gearshift paddles, offering comfort for all driving conditions. The dashboard and upper door trim are upholstered in leather with red topstitching, subtly contrasting with black AMG sports seats and red seatbelts.

The Mercedes-AMG C 43’s roomy interior appears worlds away from the compact cockpit of a Formula 1 racing car, but it is not as distant as you might think. Its hand-built AMG M139l engine is the world’s first series production unit to feature an electric exhaust-gas turbocharger. This race-ready technology falls under the company’s “One Man, One Engine” principle, which means that it is carefully assembled by a single master engine builder, where the attention to detail certainly pays off. This new form of turbocharging guarantees a spontaneous response across the entire rev range, immediately reacting to the input of the driver. Electronically controlled turbo technology enables higher torque at a lower rev range, making acceleration from a standstill an absolute breeze.

During wet weather, power is transmitted via the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission, where a wet start-off clutch replaces torque power, reducing weight thanks to its lower inertia and optimising pedal input during load changes. Further driving adaptations are available through five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs: “Slippery,” “Comfort,” “Sport +,” and “Individual.” In “Sport” and “Sport +” modes, the engine’s responsiveness and shifting behaviour are tuned to be particularly agile, maximising speed in a host of driving environments. When it comes to cornering, no matter the climate, rear-wheel steering offers stability at higher speeds, true to Mercedes-AMG’s performance roots.

At the heart of the car’s performance features is an AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine which combines high-performance technologies with exemplary efficiency, manufactured at the company’s site in Affalterbach. This is housed within a beautifully luxurious exterior with brand-exclusive detailing, which includes an AMG-specific radiator grille with chrome vertical struts, as well as an AMG front bumper with air flics, sporty air intakes and chrome-plated trims, meaning it looks as good as it drives.

Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management for Mercedes-AMG GmbH, felt the car’s technology made the Sedan an even more attractive option: “The new turbocharging system and the 48-volt on-board electrical system not only contribute to the outstanding driving dynamics of the C 43 but also improve its efficiency. In this way, we are demonstrating the tremendous potential that lies in electrified combustion engines.”
