We’ve geared up for winter a bit too seriously this year, and we’re evolving from gorpcore, venturing into more iced territories with skiwear and technical snowgear. The gorpcore jackets are getting thicker, the water-resistant pants are getting insulation and the trail shoes are getting spikes on the soles.
We’re dressed for snowy terrains fr. “Skiing outfits” searches have increased by 255% on Pinterest this year. Sports sunglasses are getting larger. And you can see skiwear and snow-wear in new collabs from Stüssy x Mountain Hardwear, Charlie Constantinou x 66° North, JJJJound x Descente and Skims x The North Face.

Techwear is mutating to colder habitats, and that might be because it’s fkn cold, but it’s also a form of escapism with skiwear being transported from the slopes to the city (just like gorpcore). You can see that in the Oakley x Palace campaign from last month, which showed the models wearing ski gear on the bus. We don’t need to go skiing, we just want the drip.
Also, snowboarding was very popular in the ‘90s. Snowboarding, basically the counterculture of winter sports, brought some hard style moments back in the ‘90s and 2000s with brands like Burton – which had linkups with Errolson Hugh and Hiroshi Fujiwara – and video games like SSX (which came out in 2000).
