Chanel has had an empty seat since CD Virginie Viard’s departure back in June, and there’s a list of designers ready to fill it. Hedi Slimane, John Galliano and Pierpaolo Piccioli have all been mentioned as strong contenders, but we’ve been hearing Blazy’s name a lot recently.

In the three years that Blazy’s been heading Bottega’s creative direction, he’s been leading the brand with creativity and excellent craftsmanship skills and precision (see: his cult trompe d’oeil leathers). He’s made Bottega into a lifestyle – not just a product – that people want to invest in.

Chanel would profit from this approach, and it seems like the house is preparing for it. After four years, Chanel returned to the Grand Palais in Paris for its SS25 show, signalling a comeback of the Karl Lagerfeld days, who would favour the venue for his runway presentations. During his reign, Lagerfeld built Chanel into a lifestyle, and made the Chanel world synonymous with ultimate luxury and sophistication. And that’s something Matthieu Blazy just gets. Plus, he would bring a new, fresh take on the Parisian house while also valuing its heritage and craft.
