Is it us or is Coachella just not hitting the same this year? Maybe it’s the echo of Fyre Fest in the botched Revolve Festival shenanigans, the oversaturation of influencers seeming to take over this year, or maybe we’ve just matured to realise that $150 Ubers to stand in a boiling hot desert crowd just, like, isn’t ideal. The cult-favourite festival is like the Glastonbury of the U.S – pulling the biggest names and forming a rite of passage for many of the artists – but this year, things have been on the quieter front.
However, Coachella isn’t all about the music. Celebs and festival-goers flock to the desert to show off their best fits, whether that’s on stage or off. This year though, we’ve largely seen a more toned-down approach to Coachella fits. It’s led to many calling for a return to pre-social media festival fashion – ‘no thoughts, just boho’ – but there have still been a couple of looks that understood the assignment this year.
HARRY STYLES
Obviously, Harry Styles came through in custom Gucci (as did his band). He wore a sequinned jumpsuit for his set, revealed after his all-black feather coat was flung off, and which perfectly complemented Shania Twain’s sparkling dress. His band wore denim jumpsuits crafted by Michele himself.
CHLOE CHERRY
Chloe Cherry has been making sure she’s included in the fashion round-ups this year. From being spotted everywhere (on and off the runway) during fashion month, to numerous editorials and campaigns, Coachella was no different – seeing the Euphoria star opt for a playful fit that said slogan tees are back.
DOJA CAT
Doja continues to rise to the ranks of mega stardom, thanks to her earworm tunes, relatable internet presence and crazy performance capabilities. Wearing Ottolinger AW22, a KNWLS bikini as well as a denim skirt situation that caused a stir in her comments, her Coachella fashion choices had to make this list.
BILLIE EILISH
There were many highlights from Billie’s set – one of which being the Gorillaz’ cameo, and another being this oversized, deconstructed white puffer that the star appeared in at the start of her headline set. Although it was on her for about 5 seconds, it set the tone for what was to be a dramatic and powerful performance from the festival’s youngest ever headliner.
JADEN SMITH
Putting the Oscars family drama behind him, Jaden Smith did his thing at Coachella, rocking his own line, MSFTS, as well as switching it up for a New Balance x ‘chella event. In true festival fashion, he brought bright colours, good vibes, and a ‘trippy summer’ fit to the fest.
