Jil Sander and Oliver Peoples are continuing their eyewear partnership with a second collection, this time loosening up the clean lines and exacting construction that defined their first outing.
Designed under Jil Sander Creative Director Simone Bellotti, Collection 2 introduces three new sunglasses, Editions 7, 9 and 10. Across the trio, the collaboration plays with contradiction. Japanese craftsmanship and technical precision are used to create frames that feel curved, fluid and less rigid than their construction might suggest.
For Edition 7, it's handmade in Japan from titanium, while the rounded frame is interrupted by a sculptural top bar that appears to fall across its upper edge, before meeting a shaped bridge and low-set endpieces. Curved temples continue the sense of movement towards sculpted tips, while adjustable nose pads nod towards vintage eyewear. Gold and silver finishes are paired with lenses ranging from Light Brown Wash and G-15 to Indigo and Grey Gradient.
Edition 9 swaps lightweight metal for substantial acetate. The frame has been carved to create an angular front that gradually slopes towards the face, while its proportions widen towards the bottom, deliberately challenging the way a conventional acetate silhouette might be expected to behave. Minimal gold engravings are tucked into the design, including a small "handcrafted in Japan" detail on the tip.
Edition 10 takes acetate somewhere softer again, with its upswept, rounded shape flowing into curved temples and sculpted tips, creating one of the most fluid silhouettes of the collection. Alongside more understated black and mahogany versions, a bright blue frame and an amber option introduce a stronger use of colour.
As Bellotti's vision for Jil Sander continues to develop, the Oliver Peoples collaboration offers another way of pushing the house's modernism beyond clothing and into the objects worn every day.
