Do creative directors need to dress well?

There’s always been an expectation to look like you work in fashion because, if your life revolves around clothes, then surely you should dress like it. This convo gets pretty deep when talking about creative directors who represent the pinnacle of creativity at high fashion brands but does it really matter if they can dress or not?

Ever heard the phrase “don’t trust a bald hairdresser”? Well, arguably, poorly dressed creative directors are the same. The argument is: if they’re not repping good style themselves, how are we meant to trust them to tell us how to dress?

Creative directors who are responsible for the aesthetic and identity of a brand should surely be so tapped into what’s fashionable and current that they could never get it wrong themselves. But is it really that deep?

Obviously, there are plenty of designers who really do wear the clothes that they make, or at least match the vibes of their collections - think Demna, Phoebe Philo, Willy Chavarria, Rick Owens, Alessandro Michele

But not all designers feel the need to do that. Whilst it is comforting to see a designer repping their own collections because it makes you feel confident that they back their clothing, many designers don’t wear what they design for plenty of reasons.

Lee Alexander McQueen had some hard fits, don’t get us wrong, but his usual uniform of tank tops and jeans didn’t really match the opulent, seductive, and avant-garde style of his runway shows.

Really, as a creative director, it’s not the fits on your back that prove you’re a credible designer - it’s the fit you send your models in on your runway.

And either way, who are you to tell Raf Simons that he needs to dress better when you show up to the office everyday in joggers?
