CELINE puts on “the show that never was” for its Homme Summer 24 collection

Last July, CELINE cancelled its menswear Summer 24 show, set to take place at La Gaîté Lyrique in Paris, due to ongoing riots. For those disappointed CELINE fans, today is your day, as the French House just put on “the show that never was” to showcase its latest menswear Summer 24 collection.

Titled “Delusional Daydream,” CELINE’s latest collection is exactly what Hedi Slimane daydreams of – think proto-punk uniforms, classy meets grungy in a dingy club, and a modern cool-ness that pays tribute to the budding NYC scene in the early ‘00s.

There’s always an air of hedonism when it comes to the Creative Director’s output, and this collection saw that very same sensation feminised, with halter and neckless black tops. Both chic and club-ready, the CELINE Homme Summer 24 show finds itself on the edge of the past and the future, and punctuated with a hearty dose of downtown New York, creating a now that feels as exciting as Slimane’s teenage outings and sneak-ins to Paris’ Le Palace.

Bows and couture bustiers take inspiration from the 17th century royal portraits, notably that of Pierre Mignard, the French Baroque painter, while plunged lambskin jeans add a bit of ‘70s flair with their flared hemlines. A hint of noughties is added sonically, as the show was accompanied by the sounds of LCD Soundsystem's 2005 self-titled debut album.

An opulent atmosphere takes over the collection, captured through a Slimane-shot short film, spanning across Paris and Monaco, specially the original runway show venue, Le Grand Rex, and the Monte-Carlo Opera Garnier. Reflective gold panels can be seen taking over the runway room, echoing the luxurious feeling felt from the sunnies all the way down to the boots.

Although the CELINE show was missed last summer, it was definitely worth the wait. It comes as a culmination of Slimane’s interests, which span across fashion, music, and photography, as well as classic CELINE codes, such as the skinny “5” black ties.
