“Oi mate!” New British icon Ceechynaa tells us how she stays winning

For the first episode of our new series “On the Couch,” where we sit down with your favourite celebrities, artists, and creatives (you guessed it) on the couch, we linked up with Ceechynaa to find out how she stays winning. Talking to Ceechynaa we got to know her best advice for young creatives, who else she thinks is killing it in music rn.

Sitting down with Ceechynaa in the studio, the first thing we noticed aside from her bubbly energy was her fit: the combo of a bikini top and Nike’s Dn8s on her feet. But ngl, it makes sense for her. Ceechynaa's experimental and boundary pushing music style matches the vibe of the Dn8, a new take on the Air Max that was dropped earlier this year and was spotlit at Nike Air Max Day 2025, gaining clout for its innovation and versatility.

Aside from her wardrobe, Ceechynaa's been pushing the boundaries in other ways, too. Her latest track “Peggy” was reposted in over 300,000 TikTok videos by her 1 million followers and streamed 70 million times across platforms. Her trademark phrase “Oi mate” lives rent free on our feeds. Since then, she’s been on the cover of magazines, on the playlists of some major names including Chloe Bailey and Lily Allen, and on plenty of people’s Spotify Wrapped. With only three songs out, all independently released with all organic promo, Ceechynaa ended 2024 with 5.8 million streams and 1 million listeners in 180 countries.

Sitting down with Ceechynaa at a studio in Kings Cross, we kicked off the first episode of “On the Couch” by asking her about her career so far: what’s been the highlight? “When ‘Peggy’ came out,” she said, “I’d been gone for like a year and a half, so when I dropped it, nothing could have prepared me for the amount of support that I got from that.” And there’s no doubt the public have stayed rallying behind Ceechynaa since her most recent drop.

Since releasing “Peggy” at the end of 2024, Ceechynaa’s become kind of a British icon, spotted in bikinis on top of big red buses, rapping about her personal life in a way that has people either gawking or memorising the lyrics on Genius so they can rap along. It’s her unapologetic and overt lyrics that have people so hooked: as a female artist, Ceechynaa’s confident and empowered personality has helped her stand out in an industry that historically has often put women down.

Talking about female empowerment – as one of the biggest reps of exactly that in British rap rn – Ceechynaa told us, “female empowerment means to me dressing the way that you want, carrying yourself the way that you want, and embracing the way that you look, even if it doesn't fit into the unrealistic beauty standards.”

And when it comes to dressing in whatever she wants, Ceechynaa chose comfort on set for “On the Couch,” dripped out in Nike, with the latest AirMax DN8 in clutch – the uniform of any true London artist. “I’d describe the Nike DN8 as bold, comfortable, and soft,” she said. “But my favourite Nike shoe growing up would be Jordan ones. But now it's Air Force’s, because they just go with everything, you know, you can literally wear it with anything.”

Despite the sportswear drip, you’ll normally find Ceechynaa in a bikini – a key feature of her personal style she’s become iconic for. Even in the freezing temperatures of London in winter, Ceechynaa’s personal style shone through in the “Peggy” music video, which was shot on top of a moving big red bus. The video blew up online, with one user commenting: “actually iconic.”

Now, her obsessions outside of making music are actually split between her unique style and one other thing: as her fans will already know, Ceechynaa's a Hello Kitty addict. “I’ve got over 500 Hello Kitty’s. My plates are Hello Kitty’s! My cutlery are Hello Kitty’s. Some of my bikinis are Hello Kitty. Still, I got a Hello Kitty toothbrush as well.”

She’s literally just a girl. At only 21-years-old, it’s easy to forget how young Ceechynaa is when you look at how she’s taking on the music industry with so much confidence. When we asked her what’s the most exciting thing about her generation, she replied, “the thing that excites me the most about my generation is me.”

Jokes aside, though, she followed this by saying, “Someone in our generation that I think is absolutely smashing it right now, would be Lola Young. Like, she's unapologetically herself, and I feel like it's a really big inspiration to see somebody go out there, not give a f*ck what people think, and just be unapologetically themselves.”

Before we left her, we had to ask Ceechynaa – as one of British rap’s fastest ascending young artists herself – what advice she’d give to other creatives trying to make it in the industry rn. She replied, “the advice I have for artists starting out their journey is, don't feel pressured into conforming to the unrealistic standards of what they believe an artist - especially a female artist - is supposed to look like.”
