Stunts within fashion shows are nothing new, but this season we’ve seen the theatrics being amped up. One show in particular that stuck out was AVAVAV’s FW23 show, in which clothes were seen being ripped off the models, heels were snapping and at the end, the set fell down. Last week, we posted a video of the show to our TikTok, which got over 500k views and over 100 comments. Here’s what CULTED’s community had to say about the spectacle.

While the creative director Beate Karlsson wanted to make light of the fashion industry, often taking itself way too seriously, showcasing one of the worst things that could happen in a show – garments coming apart – some of you had a different interpretation. @zombiegh0ul stated “its criticism on fast fashion” – not a bad take considering how quickly fast fashion clothing comes undone.

Most of the comments were in awe of Karlsson’s genius idea – @thedarknessofmind commented “That is such a good idea, the vision is definitely there, well executed”. It was a risky move from AVAVAV, considering it defied what fashion shows are all about: showcasing a new collection in its most meticulous form from the set design to the choice of model for each outfit. The risk paid off, at least according to @yevinramloll who said “Avavav always slays”.

For some, this show reminded them of real-life fashion blips, including @shinyshinycc whose comment reads “Roblox glitch clothes fr” or @user00xmannnnnn who said it reminded them of “clo3d when u try preview but you forgot to sew some parts of the clothing”. We feel your pain. Many of you were reminded of RuPaul’s Drag Race, including @seefonb, where drag queens are often taking off layers and layers of clothing to reveal a surprise outfit under. We see it, and we respect it.

What really struck a chord with all of you though was the ending of the show, where the set really fell apart as Karlsson was taking her final bow. @heauxtoshoot thought “the set coming apart is so camp like”. We think Susan Sontag would agree. @byeolve was concerned for the designer’s safety, but don’t worry, we heard the wall was actually just made out of styrofoam. No models or designers were hurt in this process, but please, do not try this at home.
