Showing off-calendar, Jacquemus does what Jacquemus wants. The French eponymous brand has been taking over some pretty wild locations over the seasons – still not over the lavender field for SS20 – but this season might top it all, with the clothing to match which took a slightly different approach this season. Here are 5 takeaways from the show you need to know about.

TAKING OVER VERSAILLES

It was ambitious, and it paid off. A week ago, Jacquemus took to its Instagram to reveal the location of the show: the historic Château de Versailles. With drone shots overlooking picturesque gardens and lakes, Versailles just makes so much sense for Jacquemus, who is redefining what French luxury looks like. Guests were brought in pairs to the red runway via small boats, and if that doesn’t scream opulence, I don’t know what does.

IT WAS CALLED “LE CHOUCHOU”

Attendees were sent a handwritten note inviting them to the grand event to showcase the collection called “Le Chouchou”. Both a pet name and a casual term for a hair tie, “Le Chouchou” is best translated to “the dearest” or “the favourite”. Whether Jacquemus is saying this is the collection he holds dearest to his heart or whether the designer himself if fashion’s favourite is open to interpretation, but either or, we’re into it.

A REGAL AFFAIR THROUGH & THROUGH

Obviously taking place in the place many French kings and queens resided in, we knew Jacquemus’ collection would be on its royal theme. The brand gave the coquette girls and boys everything and more, with an ensemble of white lace looks. Long lives the spirit of Marie Antoinette.

JACQUEMUS GAVE US PUFFY

Taking inspiration from period dress, Jacquemus gave us puffy skirts for days. We also saw the puffed-out details on sleeves, rounded mini dresses and a men’s white button up jacket that took inflation fashion quite literally. The most interesting though was the men’s underwear peeking from their trousers, with the visible boxer waistband trend receiving a cloud-like makeover.

AND HE BROUGHT OUT THE BIG NAME MODELS

Jacquemus loves a Hadid moment – throwback to her iconic hair flip for FW20. For his show, the French designer enlisted Gigi Hadid, the second model to walk down, who wore a frilly two-piece sheer lace number paired with white bra and underwear and below-the-knee floral-embroidered socks. Kendall Jenner also joined the roster, wearing a puffed-out white mini dress, some square-toed ballet-flat inspired shoes and a necklace reminiscent of the necklace Diana wore with her infamous revenge dress.
