Drake is a multi-platinum selling artist, became Spotify’s most streamed artist in 2018, and won countless awards including 5 Grammy Awards and 29 Billboard Music Awards. Sure, we’ll give it to him. But he also happens to be one of the – if not the – corniest figures in the limelight. We’re not sure why but most things Drake does just make us think “Why, Drizzy, why?”
It all started where the rapper made his own debut: Degrassi. Now, aside from everything Jimmy went through, he was still a corny character. And sure, we can blame the show’s writers for that but Drake’s acting wasn’t exactly top notch either. Let’s remember while the artist has won a Grammy, there’s definitely no Oscar’s in sight for him.
To be fair, Drake was only 15 years old when he started his acting career and most people would agree that trying to forget any memory of that time has become a survival instinct at this point. But that’s the thing with Drake, unlike most of us, he never grew out of his corny phase. If anything it just amplified in sync with his fame and success. Just take for example his 2016 Hotline Bling dance that even ironically we can’t conjure to recreate.
Coming off the success of that song, and his album Views, 2016 was Drake’s year, cementing himself as one of the biggest rappers ever. Then, he had to go on SNL and rap about how he wasn’t done with his water after a cleaning lady took it away, and how he has beef with someone who used the seat he was resting his cap on. Sure, SNL is meant to be comedy but were we laughing with Drake or at Drake?
Drake has done some pretty cringey things in the past – like him saying “21, can you do somethin’ for me” on Rich Flex or blurting out “do you know who I am?” with an air of entitlement whilst getting kicked out of a party or even getting a perfume tattooed on him – but it’s also the things he said. Granted, rappers’ bars don’t always hit but in Drake’s case it’s like he knew they weren’t going to hit but still decided to go with them. Some of our favourites include U With Me’s “You toying with it like a happy meal”, Pop Style’s “Got so many chains, I feel like Chain-ing Tatum” or even Weston Road Flows “I get green like Earth Day”. On second thought, maybe he really thought these were it.
If you needed more proof, think of the time where Drake bet $400k on Jake Paul winning the Tommy Fury fight, or when he shaved a heart shape in his hair in line for his new album release. There was also that too painful to re-watch moment where, after confessing his love to Rihanna, got rejected on stage live at the MTV VMAs. This must have been a pretty heartbreaking moment for him, or just another one of his many rejections. After all, he spent $10 million on an ‘engagement ring’ necklace, made from the rings of his past 42 failed proposals. That’s got to be a Guiness World record right?
It’s not just us that think this of Drake though, with the “Drake is the type of guy” meme that took over the Internet. Twitter user @mayravein said “Drake is the type of guy to ask someone to tuck him into bed” and @nonoone53831178 said “Drake is the type of guy to say, ‘don’t worry, daddy’s home’” Not wrong.
If all of this wasn’t enough to convince you, just take a look at the recent jacket Drake wore that had the words “Hard Feelings / Harder Dick” embroidered in. We could have gone our entire lives not being witness to this, yet here we are, feeling extremely unsettled.
