“Big boobs?” asked Nicki Minaj on an IG live in 2019, and the world hasn’t been the same since. New York label Vaquera followed Nicki’s vision for FW25 and gave us the world’s biggest bras at Paris Fashion Week – “Um, chile, anyways.”
NYC designer duo Bryn Taubensee and Patric DiCaprio, who have been showing in Paris for the past three years, are now relocating permanently to the French capital, and the FW25 collection nods to the move with its chic Parisian vibe of more muted avant-garde aesthetics reminiscent of a risqué Margiela.
“As fashion becomes more annoying and tacky, we’re more excited to be chic, and create clothes that people would actually want to wear and are still exciting but not wasteful, boring or annoying,” Patric told us on the collection. Vaquera went for a strong ‘80s theme with balloon-sleeved puffy prom dresses with deep V-cuts, and big shoulder pads on jackets and bodysuits. The broad shoulders were paired with reaching-the-ground oversized pearls, fur trapper hats and shawls took the runway, and don’t forget the ultra-oversized bras that were worn as draped tops. Looks like the brand also worked on more leather accessories with oversized belts, fingerless gloves and square totes.
When we asked the designer duo what their favourite piece was from the new collection Patric said: “That’s such a hard question, it’s like asking a mum to pick her favourite kid. I really liked our big pink dress, it was one of the only moments of colour in the show, and it felt really strong.” Bryn on the other hand went for the more demure option: “I liked the black dress, that was the more commercial version of that.”
Refined, bold and confident – as Patric said himself: exciting but definitely not boring or annoying. The Vaquera duo really found the perfect medium of outlandish yet sophisticated wearable pieces, with just the right amount of eccentricity – presenting their strongest collection to date.
