Thundercat is bringing some LA to London through an exclusive collaboration with Dover Street Market, in line with his UK and EU tour. The six-string bass guitarist and singer-songwriter has fused influences from his home city with his unique creative approach, and each piece gives us a glimpse into the Thundercat universe.

Designed in line with a painstaking eye for detail, references to Anime, the timeless heritage of luxury fashion Houses, and his beloved cat Tron, merge with nods to musical heroes across each piece. The collection channels Thundercat’s love of Japanese art and pop culture, seen in the inclusion of kimonos produced in partnership with Japanese artisans Robe Japonica, collegiate-style cardigans complete with anime-inspired Thundercat prints, as well as a healthy dose of logo detailing.

The capsule offering is heavy on nostalgia, most notably a red and white football shirt adorned with team badges and the Thundercat logo. Each piece feels like a considered reimagination of Thundercat’s personal style, which incorporates streetwear staples with anime accessories and components of traditional Japanese dress. Thundercat’s varied and eclectic personal style mirrors his range of musical feats, which has seen the musician play guitar for Erykah Badu and Suicidal Tendencies, as well as collaborating with Tame Impala, Gorillaz, Silk Sonic, and Kendrick Lamar, on top of his 13-year solo career.

Speaking on the collection, Thundercat reflected on his own introduction to fashion. “I feel like my sense of fashion was passed down to me by my parents. As an illustrator, I loved seeing the colour palettes used in creating cartoon characters I loved to watch growing up. I always wondered to myself why most of the things I was attracted to aesthetically I did not see in real life? And it would make me question what was wrong with everyone?”

For Thundercat, fashion and music go hand in hand. Fashion has been a way for the musician to channel the energy of his heroes, including Miles Davis, Jimmy Hendrix, George Duke, Stanley Clarke, and Jaco Pastorius. The “Dragonball Durag” singer sees how we dress as a way to express individuality. “In the family I come from, to be individual – that is who we are. Individually together. That is what this collaboration represents. Individual, together,” he shared.

Thundercat’s debut collection will be available exclusively at Dover Street Market’s London flagship and the Dover Street Market E-SHOP from Tuesday, April 2.
