The best advice for fashion students from LCF fashion students

Drop out; stay in; study hard; network: it feels like every piece of advice fashion students get is different, and filtering through to find what actually works isn’t easy. That’s why we spoke to some London College of Fashion (LCF) students studying at the uni right now to find out what it’s really like to be a fashion student. Straight from the students going through it themselves, here’s what you need to know.

“Probably just relax. Be yourself. It’s cliche, but you really don’t need to be anyone else in this creative industry.”

Lilijana, 1st Year Fashion Design & Development student

“Don’t worry about your skills before you come to [university]. Don’t stress about what you don’t know, because this is the time where you get to learn it.”

James, 2nd Year Fashion Design & Development student

“Every tutor is looking for something different; everybody is looking for something different. Just because somebody doesn’t love your style of work doesn’t mean it’s not worthy. You just have to keep experimenting. Some people will love it, some people won’t.”

Sophia, 2nd Year Costume Design for Performance student

“Get a sewing machine ASAP. Start learning CLO like way earlier. And maybe have a long look in the mirror and decide “do I really want to do fashion or not” because it will consume your life very quickly.”

Robert, 2nd Year Fashion Design: Menswear student

“Be brave, and don’t set too many rules for yourself.”

Yingruo aka Melanie, 3rd Year Fashion Textiles: Knit student

“Live in the moment: actually enjoy yourself, and don’t get too stressed. Just think to yourself: this is exactly where I wanted to be a few years ago.”

Maggie, 3rd Year Fashion Pattern Cutting student

“Don’t take anything too seriously. Just remember to relax, have fun, listen to your friends and learn from them as well. Remember it’s just fabric, it’s just fashion, it’s not that serious.”

Zachary, 3rd Year Fashion Pattern Cutting student
