We spoke to Beate Skonare Karlsson about AVAVAV's zombified FW25 show

AVAVAV FW25 was enough to wake the dead - and it kind of did too, by dressing its models as the living dead, only with a higher degree of drip.

The show opened with its guests seated in a room full of dirt, when the lights dimmed, spotlighting the ground, and a pair of hands began to clamber from it. The dirt then gave way to a pit - or grave, if you will - that the first model in a mesh dress and heels clawed her way out of, full on “Night of the Living Dead” style.

The collection was at its core inspired by sports, with American football jerseys and broad shoulder pads seen throughout the collection, amongst AVAVAV’s familiar distressed sweatshirts and joggers.

However, it also took on a more elevated workwear edge in some parts, where we saw trompe l’oeil tees with fake ties, cowl neck dresses, and mesh blouses with bows at the nipple (some were pretty NSFW, but giving office siren nonetheless).

We linked up with Beate Beate Skonare Karlsson, the Creative Director behind AVAVAV, to find out more about the collection. Here’s what she had to say.

Who would you love to see styled in the FW25 collection?

"Kate Moss."

If this collection had a soundtrack - one song you associate with it overall - what would it be?

"Shoreline by Broder Daniel."

AVAVAV's a gem on the Milan schedule for its designs ofc, but also for its shows which always feature a different viral stunt or fun theme. How did these moments at your runway shows become such a big part of AVAVAV, and why are they so important to the brand?

"We’re a young brand and we’re still a very small team, and while we love making our shows it also requires insane time and effort. So if we’re gonna do a show it really needs to be something we feel strongly about otherwise it wouldn’t make sense, and it probably wouldn’t be as impactful."

Do you have a favourite piece from the collection?

"The rib cage slashed hoodie is one of my favourites."

If you could give one piece of advice to emerging designers, what would that be?

"Design the clothing that you want to wear yourself, and don’t do drugs."
