Wondering how short your shorts should be? Look at Juergen Teller

Menswear is in its slut era right now. So next time it’s hot out, hike up your hemline and show some leg. Looking at the SS25 front row it would be easy to think Paul Mescal is the prince of the three-inch inseam, but one man has been killing it in short shorts before Mescal even made his acting debut: Juergen Teller.

When the weather gets warm, Teller, the legendary fashion photographer who shot LOEWE’s FW24 campaign, is the first to get his thighs out, and if you’re asking why, his answer is simple: “I don’t understand longer shorts,” as he told the Financial Times. To be fair, it makes sense, if you’re wearing shorts, they need to be … short.

While it’s not uncommon to see Juergen sporting a pair of tiny running shorts and ASICS trainers while he’s trotting around London, the photographer has cut about in custom-made Céline short shorts from when his mate Phoebe Philo was Creative Director. And these bad boys are anything but quiet. Often Teller’s shorts arrive in neon colours, at odds with the monochrome masses at Yohji Yamamoto’s runway shows, of which he is a regular attendee.

But why are people so obsessed with Juergen Teller’s skimpy shorts? The photographer has lensed campaigns for some of fashion’s biggest labels including Vivienne Westwood, Saint Laurent, JW Anderson, Marc Jacobs, and a boat load of celebrities, including Kate Moss, Kim Kardashian, and Kanye West. And despite these super polished circles he finds himself in Teller’s style is weirdly relatable. It’s a super fashionable sunday fit, that is as ready for Park Runs as it is Paris Fashion Week.

If you want to deep it, Jeurgen Teller’s overexposed, raw style brings beauty to the everyday and the imperfections it encompasses, and his short shorts and trainers feels like an honest reflection of this style of photography. Teller’s normal-leaning neon looks have made him a style icon in his own right – just look at London skate lads Palace, who featured Teller in its SS18 lookbook campaign.

So when the next scorcher rolls around, get your short shorts out like the tiny inseam king Juergen Teller. You won’t regret it.
