This past weekend was a big one for Rihanna stans. First, social media and legacy media outlets were set alight with the rumour that she would be headlining Glastonbury this summer. Then it was slated that she would be doing a London concert residency at the London Stadium (Westham Football Club) come June. Both theories are based on insight from “industry sources” as told to The Telegraph.
But all that pails in comparison with the confirmation from Riri herself that she’s set to release new music. In an interview with Harpers Bazaar, she said of the upcoming drop, “This feels right. It feels like it digs right into where I need to be, and I want this. This body needs to come out, and I’m ready to go there… I know it’s not going to be anything that anybody expects. And it’s not going to be commercial or radio digestible. It’s going to be where my artistry deserves to be right now. I feel like I’ve finally cracked it, girl!”
To be fair, Rihanna’s been teasing new music for years (it’s been almost 9 years since she dropped a song). But she admitted in the interview that until now, none of it has felt quite right. “I’ve been in the studio the whole eight years. But it didn’t hit me. I was searching for it. I went through phases of what I wanted to do. ‘This kind of album, not that album.’ I know it’s not going to be anything that anybody expects.”
If she is releasing new music, it would make sense that she would do a concert residency and festival appearances to promote it. So who knows? Will we see a return to Riri’s London Sainsbury’s shopping bag era?
