Just as his SS21 show, Rick Owens’ FW21 show took place in Lido, a town outside Venice. Set in front of an imposing church, models were seen walking out of a cloud of hellish smoke, a perfect setting that foretells imminent doom. The soundtrack of the show; Ghostmane’s HellRap only accentuated the infernal feel of the show.
Titled Gethsemane after the Jerusalem garden Jesus prayed in the night before his crucifixion, Owens compares his FW21 collection to our current times, stating “we’re all living a tense period in history waiting for a resolution, be it catastrophic or rational, in a suspense that feels almost biblical in its drama.”
The show featured hooded robes, Owens’ signature thigh-high platform boots, jackets with built-in gloves and masks, attire appropriate to face the day of reckoning. The collection also showed the newest collaborative sneaker with Converse Chuck Taylors, which had its star reworked into a pentagram. The shoe features three toe caps as well as two layers of rubber outsole and will be released under Owens’ Drkshdw brand.
From cropped bomber jackets to oversized shoulders and long overcoats, Owens offers a re-worked idea of masculinity, straying from the traditional sense of the word. As the designer stated, his collection aims to explore the “male suppressed rage on every side of the moral divide.”
The designer’s dark glamour left us all on the edge of our seats for what’s to come. Who knows whether tomorrow will be the Earth’s annihilation or just another day. In either case, Rick Owens has us covered.
