PUMA is reviving the iconic Mostro sneaker 25 years after its initial release, bringing us some boundary-pushing sportswear nostalgia for the year ahead.

Originally released in 1999, the PUMA Mostro, defied convention with its visually distinct, low-profile silhouette, which drew inspiration from sprinting spikes and chilled-out surfing shoes. The sneaker’s name is derived from the Italian word for monster, which was fitting for the disruptive style at the time. For 2024, the archival trainer will be available in Light Grey and Yellow colourways and has been reconstructed with a mesh upper, an overlaid PUMA formstrip in metallic silver, elastic strap closure and lycra liner.

In a campaign lensed by photographer Chris Maggio, the Mostro is captured in its natural habitat: the city, where tourists and tastemakers rub shoulders each day. Talent can be seen going full tourist mode as they don foam Statue of Liberty headwear to browse a never-ending wave of tourist traps.

The headwear is then exchanged for a baseball cap as models can be seen munching on dollar pizza slices, protected from the rain by a translucent “I love New York” rain poncho. Later, we see the shoes worn in an industrial setting, with otherworldly beauty modifications, such as elf ears and bodily disfigurements, adding to the striking campaign. Images capture thawing frost as the shoes reemerge into the metropolis following a 25-year cryogenic slumber, ending the anticipation for the iconic sneaker from Y2K-obsessed fashion girlies and historically in-tune sneakerheads alike.

The PUMA Mostro has become a cult-loved classic in recent years, thanks to its Y2K sportswear legacy, which is rooted in the future-looking frenzy that gripped fashion at the turn of the century. This was recently channelled into a collaboration with Berlin-based label Ottolinger, who revealed a mega Mostro Boot during Paris Fashion Week earlier this year. The Mostro aligned with Ottolinger’s signature brand of deconstruction, thanks to its instantly recognisable yet slimmed-down design, and marked the second venture between the two brands.

The PUMA Mostro will be available at select retailers, including Dover Street Market, Slam Jam, VooStore, Kith, The Broken Arm, LN-CC, END., and WORKSOUT from January 13 2024.
