Pharrell’s education non-profit, YELLOW, recently announced a collaborative initiative between the three, titled ‘Your Voice is Power’. the initiative has been set up to help teach students about music coding. The initiative is set to include five teaching modules that will offer practical coding skills as well as creating a platform for teachers and students to discuss racial injustice. This program will be available to all middle-school and high-school students in the United States and Canada.
In addition, ‘Your Voice is Power’ will also be hosting a music style competition for the students. The competition will require each contestant to remix Pharrell’s 2020 single ‘Entrepreneur’. They will remix the song using their own voices, in part thanks to Georgia Tech’s coding platform Earsketch.
In a statement, Pharrell described the collaborative effort between YELLOW, Amazon and Georgia Teach as a “celebration of Black creators and change-makers,”. Pharrell further went on to say “Teaching kids future-ready skills like coding, especially those kids for whom opportunities like this have not been equally distributed, is how we prepare the next generation of entrepreneurs.”
The first round competition of ‘Your Voice is Power’ kicked off yesterday, with the second round taking place from March 15 to June 4. You can learn more about the initiative here.
