Miu Miu’s “Tales & Tellers” celebrates women’s voices in cinema

Whilst most of us see watching movies as a casual hobby, cinema has always been at the forefront of social change, highlighting new narratives, impacting the zeitgeist, and giving a voice to those who don’t have one. That’s why Miu Miu’s presence as an official partner of “Tales & Tellers,” a special project set to be revealed at Art Basel Paris 2024, makes so much sense. The project aims to highlight how stories, particularly in film, can change minds, alter courses, shift lives, and give us new perspectives.

The partnership makes sense for Miu Miu when you consider that its founder and Creative Director Miuccia Prada herself has always put women and their lives, their histories, and their tales at the forefront of her collections. Even at FW24, the focus of Miu Miu’s collection was on clothing being passed between generations, studying the lives and habits of people through the styles they wear.

For Miuccia Prada, clothing is a method of self-expression that gives that wearer agency to say what they want to say about themselves. Much like film, fashion is a vessel that can be used to break the status quo and alter perceptions of yourself. And Miuccia Prada’s fascination with women’s representation in film has been evident for a long time too. In 2011, the house launched Miu Miu Women’s Tales, a platform for female filmmakers to present their own work.

Prada’s collections tend to manipulate certain characters on the runway, whether it’s the girl next door, the chic business owner, or the frantic intern, and this is something that translates into “Tales & Tellers.” The project has enlisted various contributors to collaborate on a selection of video pieces, bringing together a multiverse of narratives each presented by a character inspired by one of Miu Miu’s runway shows since SS22. Enlisting real-life actors, the performances based on Miu Miu’s own collections recall and play out the stories of everyday experiences, both real and imagined, showing how in film we can become agents of their own narrative.

Hosted at the Palais d’Iéna between 16th to 20th October, “Tales & Tellers” was conceived by interdisciplinary artist Goshka Macuga and convened by Elvira Dyangani Ose, director of Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona. Coinciding with the event, there will also be a series of panel talks made available online on October 3rd, which you can tune into to find out more about the discourse around the project and meaning behind it.

Opening on October 16th, admission to the Miu Miu “Tales & Tellers” programme is free. Hit up this link to find out more about the upcoming event.
