MARKGONG’s SS25 was inspired by Sex and the City

Sex and the City has been a major point of reference for city girls’ style inspo, whether it’s Carrie’s Manolos, Samantha’s power shoulders or Charlotte’s romantic, preppy dresses. And MARKGONG’s been through the Pinterest boards. For his SS24 collection the Shanghai and New York-based designer used Samantha Jones, “public relations executive, unmarried woman” as a muse – and for SS25 he kept his Sex and the City theme and showed a collection inspired by Charlotte York, modelled by Charlotte herself, Kristin Davis for RougeFashionBook.

The collection, which showed today at Shanghai Fashion Week, featured perfectly poised looks of polka dots, soft pastel knits, flower embroidery, reading glasses and cunty capri pants that give off that ‘90s and early 2000s independent-woman-looking-for-husband archetype. SS25 captured the perfect housewife aesthetic but subverted it, introducing reality to it – models walked down the runway carrying real dogs, paper bags with flowers, and the Lily dress, the highlight of the collection, has embellished child handprints on the ass, referencing a scene from the Sex and the City movie where Charlotte’s daughter Lily ruins her vintage skirt with hand paint. “It’s a wardrobe for the woman who’s done playing by the rules and is ready to tear up the script,” Gong wrote in his show notes. Because like Charlotte we’re all envisioning a perfect life, but the outcome is a bit messier.
